How to Calculate Options Greeks — Delta Gamma Theta Vega Explained Simply

6 min read · April 2026 · White Stallion AI

Options Greeks sound intimidating. They shouldn't be. Each Greek answers one simple question about your options position. Here's what they mean in plain English — with real Nifty examples.

Delta — how much will I make if the stock moves ₹1?

Delta ranges from 0 to 1 for calls, 0 to -1 for puts. A delta of 0.5 means your option gains ₹0.50 for every ₹1 the stock moves up.

Example: Nifty 24,200 CE with delta 0.55 and lot size 75. If Nifty rises 100 points, your profit ≈ 0.55 × 100 × 75 = ₹4,125.

Trading use: ATM options have ~0.5 delta. Deep ITM → delta near 1 (moves like stock). Deep OTM → delta near 0 (barely moves).

Theta — how much am I losing per day?

Theta is time decay. Options lose value every day, even if the stock doesn't move. Theta is always negative for option buyers and positive for option sellers.

Example: If theta is -₹510 for your position, you're losing ₹510 per day to time decay. If you're a seller, you're earning ₹510/day.

Trading use: Option sellers love high theta. Time is your friend when you sell. Theta accelerates in the last week before expiry — which is why weekly option sellers target Thursday/Friday entries.

Gamma — how fast does delta change?

Gamma measures how much delta changes when the stock moves ₹1. High gamma = your position's sensitivity changes rapidly. This matters for risk management.

Trading use: ATM options have the highest gamma. If you're selling ATM options, a sudden move can flip your position from profitable to unprofitable very quickly. Gamma risk is why iron condors are safer than naked straddles.

Vega — how does volatility affect my position?

Vega measures sensitivity to implied volatility (IV). If IV rises 1%, a vega of ₹487 means your position gains ₹487 (if long vega) or loses ₹487 (if short vega).

Trading use: Buy options before events (earnings, budget) when IV is expected to rise. Sell after events when IV crushes. White Stallion AI's Strategy Lab has an IV slider — drag it to see how volatility changes affect your strategy.

In the Strategy Lab: Every strategy shows Greeks with progress bars and plain-English explanations. Delta: "Bullish. Gains if price rises." Theta: "Earning ₹510/day from time decay." No math degree required.
